How to find the right tutor for a struggling reader

If your reader has been screened or tested and dyslexia is identified, or after watching Susan Barton's video you strongly suspect dyslexia and want to want to start remediation immediately:
  1. Look only for a tutor using a recognized Orton-Gillingham influenced system.
  2. Determine if the tutor has achieved certification in that system. This means the tutor has been tested and observed and given the "stamp of approval" by the developers of the system.
  3. Ask the tutor if they have experience working with students of all ages, with varying levels of ADD/ADHD, possibly on the autism spectrum, generally not wanting to be tutored, and/or downright mad at their inability to read.

Why I enjoy tutoring and building confident readers

  1. I use the Barton Reading & Spelling System exclusively. It's an internationally recognized Orton-Gillingham influenced system for remediating dyslexia that works. I don't take an "ecclectic" approach of mixing and matching bits of different systems, I stick to the Barton System because I've seen it work with all my students.
  2. I am a Certified Barton Tutor - one of only a few in TN.
  3. The Barton System is wonderful but it doesn't teach itself. Every student and adult is different. After tutoring 5 years I've developed the ability to quickly learn a student's personality and interests. We establish a good working relationship built on respect, patience, and the ability to laugh. While I try my best to make the sessions as enjoyable as possible for the student, I also learn how to gently push them when obstacles are encountered.
  4. Remote tutoring is so convenient - imagine not having to drive your student to tutoring! Your student can sit in your den or kitchen in front of a PC or Mac and I'm able to tutor them using a free conferencing program called Zoom. It's amazing and students love it. I am in TN  (Central Time Zone) and am able to schedule tutoring even if you live in another state.

How long will it take?

It can take anywhere from 18 months to three years to get readers to grade level. This is based on two sessions per week. There is no "quick fix" for dyslexia.

How often will it be?

Two 50-minute sessions per week is the minimum recommended by Susan Barton.

How much will it cost?

I am an experienced Certified Barton tutor and charge $55 per session.
